I cut a short log from some cedar gifted to me by Hurricane Idalia last year, and with some leather I had on hand, I made a custom dap for one of my antique IMA Nepalese Army khukuris (Nepali script stamped "longleaf" 15-inch blade). I bought two antique Gurkha patch knives during the MRL Father's Day sale to use as the karda and chakmak. I used the hand tools shown (note the Stanley #113 circular plane, great for shaping inside and outside curves) to carve the core, but used a power drill and a #41 bit to produce stitching holes in the leather.
I inletted the core in back with gouges to fit the internal leather sheaths that I sewed for the karda and chakmak I used some brown leather to cover the top of the core, and to cover the tip. I made a matching belt, which will also serve as a baldric (my preferred carriage style).
IMHO, the pictures are mostly self-explanatory.
