Hello all, this is my first post on the forum. I’m currently in the process of making my first sword via stock removal. Blade is 5160 spring steel. I’m currently attempting it to pattern after an XVIa without the fuller.
So far things are going well and I’ll be putting in the distal taper soon. As I am attempting to plan ahead and find an individual who does commissions of heat treating and tempering others’ blades as I don’t have access to an oven large enough for this build. I should also mention I am located in Alberta Canada but would be happy to ship to anywhere in the US.
I’ve already contact DSA as they are located in Quebec and they said this is something they could take on, but after hearing some worrying things about them on this forum, I’ve decided to probably not have them do that work.
If anyone could recommend an individual or company that would be willing and HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE in heat treating and tempering 5160 spring steel please let me know!!
Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
Lyndle Driggers of JL used to heat treat and temper blades for other makers. He definitely has the skills and tools. Dunno if he’s accepting commissions, though. He’s here on SBG as well as FB.
Also, if you are willing, it would be great to see your work displayed here on the forum.

Hey Madirish, I’ll reach out to him as well. The total length of blade and tang is around 43.35” with the blade being 34.5”.

Think I saw they don't do oil cooled blades that long.

Thanks Izzy! Do you have personal experience with this company? Seems like there are more commercial in nature, but saw they do heat treat knives.

None, but many people say they are the best with CS and were happy... I see MadIrish is correct. They only treat oil hardening steels to 30" ( all other steels 50") so that likely not work..Sorry got excited seeing those big ovens.

I don't know if you've seen this video, but you might want to watch it. They mention they use Braddock Metallurgical www.braddockmt.com, but also say that their blades have the potential to warp.

Matt Parkinson from Dragons breath forge got back to me and said he’d do the work for a very reasonable and fair price. He walked me through their equipment and process and it’s an understatement to say I’m excited to finish my blade and send it to him.
Thanks everyone for your help and comments!!
Again, I’ll be starting a post with the journey of building my first blade soon!
( PS. Where should I post that too?)
