Are there any markings on the spine of the blade? Frequently say which armoury and what date the piece was made. Also look closely at the grip and guard for any stamped letters or figures, which can help indicate when it was made.
It is not an 1837, it appears to be a French 1853 Naval Officer's saber hilt. I assume, based on the blade shape that it is a late one as it is not of the earlier style fighting blades...think it is from a later period when swords were firmly ceremonial.

As madirish noted, this is an 1853 model. Some authors called every model an 1837, even though there are at least 4 different ones between 1837 and 1957. This one comes with a Toledo style of blade instead of the regulation blade. The absence of a crown on the hilt and scabbard indicate post 1870 make. If the scabbard has a metal core under the leather it would be post 1891.
