Just wondering, how is the menuki held in place? Is it just the tension of the wrapping, or are they secured in any other way to the handle? Please don’t k1ll me lol.

Menuki Andi, not mekugi. The similarity of Japanese terms gets me too.

On traditionally made menuki, there are pegs on the back side which get inserted into holes made in the samegawa/core. A pitch type glue can also be used for extra hold. With most modern cast menuki, there are no pegs and it’s just the tension of the ito wrap holding them. Some cast menuki, such as the feathers on the Hanwei Raptor series swords, have a spike or hook on the back for the same purpose as described above. Some casts that were made from antique menuki also have the pegs, but are part of the cast instead of being a separate piece soldered on but unfortunately, these are often filed down to the same depth as the rims preventing the pegs from being functional.
