Hello,
I'm rather new to making things. I was thinking of making a scabbard for my sidesword.
When I looked at my blade, it seemed very thin compared to my longsword.
So I was hoping to know if it is advisable to cut out the sheath's width wider than the actual blade while still having the indentation within the blade's width to be a bit snug.
Thank you.

When I make a leather sheath I always design it for there to be a little space on the margins inside, on the edge and spine sides, so the blade doesn't bind, or rub its edge against the inside when drawing/re-inserting. And for a snug fit I make it so the middle layer has a somewhat smaller diameter than the blade's thickness, in order for the front and back sheath layers to press just a bit against the flats of the blade. I've never made a wood core sheath or scabbard, if that's what you plan to do, but I imagine I'd make it the same way.

Thank you for this tip, I'll try to see if I can make it work.
