Hello, hope you are all doing well.
I have a friend whose son will graduate the United States Merchant Marine Academy next year and he would like to present him with an appropriate weapon.
I am a veteran but know little about USMM or Naval weaponry for that matter. I am actually a gun guy (own a shop) so I can take the lead on a 1911 or a Garand but I've only just recently taken an interest in swords.
What would be an applicable sword or rifle? I think a modern production sword would be best and though it will not be used, I think it should be able to hold an edge and cut more than cake.
I've done some research and come up with the M1941 as the last naval boarding cutlass but can only find the M1860 on the vendor sites I know of.
It doesn't have to be a blade if a gun is more appropriate.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge.
A.

Cold Steel sold a Marine NCO sword, you might be able to find one second hand. There are a lot 1917 cutlasses around now (Windlass, United Cutlery and Cold Steel even sells a left handed version) There is also a Kingson Arms Trim design cutlass wich is really nice looking.

This is a variation of the US Navy Officer's sword, like the Coast Guard one. Probably stainless steel, "ceremonial", so not a real weapon, dunno if that's a problem here. Years ago Cold Steel made a carbon steel Officer's, I own one, but nowadays all seem to have stainless steel blades.

Yes, the one noted on marlow and white would be a modified version of the Navy uniform sword (but without USN on the guard).
