I don't know much about swords, but I do think it's just a display. Still curious as to what you guys think of it, though. For one, it's 440 steel, along with the back being pretty flat. The hilt doesn't have the wrapping around it (not sure what it's called) that traditional katanas have, which makes me think it's either not a katana or a poorly made one.

imageresizer.com/Just resize to 1 MB and you are GTG. I will tell you right now 440 is usually too brittle for a "real" sword.

Hi, try to use an image resizer app to reduce the file size and switch to desktop mode in your browser or the forum site (scroll down) even on a mobile to get access to the attachment system.

Welcome to the forum Uploaded photos must be less than 1mb in size each. You can also post photos thru a photo hosting site. sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/62174/add-picturesWithout photos or more info, it will be hard to help you. From what you posted already, it sounds like you may have a 440 stainless steel bar in the shape of a katana, perhaps in wooden storage fittings / shirasaya. Generally, stainless is considered to be too brittle to safely use for a functional sword. Regardless, sentimental value for such items can be very high.
