So, I know that they often had either plates or a unique form of lamellar that formed their armor, but I am unsure of the material. I know that lacquered leather is documented as used, but did they ever use iron lacquered for weather protection?

Most of their armor was lacquered iron. The link below will have all the info you need. The author, Anthony Bryant studied Japanese armor in Japan. He is the author of several books on the subject. Enjoy www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/index.html
