Interested in adding a Wakizashi to my collection. Pretty new to the Japanese sword market though are there any specific models people recommend in this price range?

If I wanted to cut stuff, I'd get a Dojo pro from Ronin. They have stout geometry, and are good cutters (I have one!). Quality control is sometimes not ideal, but you get a bit of that from most manufacturers, particularly in this price range. If I wanted one mostly for display, I'd get it from Wang Katana 2011, Jkoo, or Ryansword, and I'd get one of their "tamahagane" types. I have a Jkoo and Wang2011 blade, and they are very nicely forged and finished. At this price range, the fittings are the same no matter where you get it from.

I have been impressed with the offerings from Shadow Dancer recently. They also offer 20% off for a first time buyer.

What dya want to do with it? Shiny for show (folded or at least a hamon) Or designed to go (cut, probably through tempered) or a bit of both? $500 isn't enough to get into the DragonKing model (they start at $560, T10 with hamon) Ronin has 4 models at $285. Through hardened 1060. black ito with white same and musashi tsuba, brown ito with white same, black ito with white same and stardard tsuba, and another brown ito with white same and crane tsuba. Lacquer the ito and hope it doesn't unravel. QC seems hit and miss. I won't even mention Cold Steel. With Hanwei, you can only get into the Practical or Raptor series Wakazashi. Raptor would be good if you want to cut harder targets. Obviously don't get the practical wakazashi if you want it to look nice (the fake same is a buzzkill). Practical Plus Wak looks ok, performs alright. None of these are for show, really. rva-katana.com/products/wakizashi-naginata-naoshi-t10-clay-tempered-1?variant=41511189020706 This looks pretty nice but you would have to ask John if they are getting them in stock again. They have other similar ones though I am not for the green or blue color motifs. The Naginata Naoshi sugata is pretty cool, though. RVA can have something custom made through their forge relationships. PhoenixArms, DragonSpring. But the same thing goes for the other Lonq Quan sellers. RyanSword, ShadowDancer/Dragonsword. Hanbon ofc besides Jkoo/Sinoswords. Murasame on Amazon, Wang-katana2011 but these aren't for custom builds but have been reviewed favorably.
