On my last trip to Japan I made another impulse buy. This time from Kuraya Hashimoto in Kyoto.
They have a small shop right next to Nijo Castle. I felt bad that a tourist was kind of hassling them on an item, shipping, they demanded to literally walk out of the shop with the sword with the salesman desperately trying to explain the export process. They were from Brazil but luckily spoke enough English for me to tell them how it worked.
Even though they were grateful I set the guy straight, it did kinda feel like I killed a sale for them, so I grabbed a moderately priced piece for myself and bought it.
I was verbally told the name of the Smith but forgot, emailing them for the translation. Unpapered, they did explain that there was a good chance it is gimei, but no certainty yet on who made it.
Longish, slender blade. Feels like a Paul Chen orchid but with more sori. 69cm long, gunome hamon, full polish and no flaws-kizu. Estimated age at around 250 years.
Copper habaki with gold plating. Brand new, very clean shirasaya.
Will post pictures tonight and translation when they get back to me.
Asking is $2250. Potentially multiple times more valuable if it passes shinsa.
