Dear all, Some years ago I bought a couple of sabres without actually a lot of knowledge. I took them out of my closet and from some I really have no idea where they come from or how old they are. So I hope someone could help me out? I'll start with by far the heaviest sabre I own. It has a few inscriptions, some barely readable. On the inside of the guard (I do hope I use the correct terms) it says something like "USNY 1911". On one of the thinner parts it has something that looks like a stamp overwritten by another stamp. It looks like it first was 989 and the first 9 was replaced with 12 making it 1289. Some other vague marks also appear to be visible to the left of it. On the spine it looks there is a name or something inscribed. I hope someone can help me steer in the right direction. I did think once it could be an American sabre, but I don't understand this 1911. Or perhaps it's a complete fake? Edit: added photo of marks on ricasso. Look like two half circles with a stripe in it and a diamond shape with a 'S'.

Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like a real 1840 heavy cavalry Sabre.
Maybe the numbers are some arsenal or unit markings or something.
Cool sword!

It looks real enough. Try to mildly clean the spine with oil or wd40 and 0000 steel wool. The script looks French. It does say 1876. Most likely will say made at xx armory in 1911 of the model 1876. Very nice sword. Take pics of any marks/stamps on the ricasso. And of course let us know if you are selling it. You may also want to post pics on International Antique Sword Collectors. www.facebook.com/groups/iascpost/Many experts there.

I looked at a few French sabres and they do seem to have similar marks and numbers. On the ricasso it has a few marks. One mark with two half circles and a stripe in it, and a diamond shape with an 'S'. I added a photo in the first post.

After comparing the text on the spine with other French sabres I believe it says M d'Armes de Chat. 9.. 1876 .... I think this means it was build in 1876 by "Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault". So a French made sabre indeed. And I believe now the M1822 model for the light cavalry. Too bad I cannot decipher that (yet) on the spine.

Does indeed look like a third gen Fr m1822 to me.
Those frenchies are among my very favorites!
