I am looking to buy an inexpensive katana or wakizashi and was offered this one. I am perfectly fine with imperfections and problems as I am looking for more of an historical artifact than a beautiful nihonto. Any advice on the age (is it Koto at least?), mei (original would be nice, but if it's been recently added, id like to know for negotiating price), and value would be greatly appreciated. It's old, but I'm not sure koto or not. Probably pre Edo though. In those ages you're less likely to get a signature, and this one doesn't look right, so I'd say probably Gimei. The tsuba has been damaged, the tsuka in a poor state of repair, the fuchi/kashira likely water damage and need to be restored. The habaki looks new, and has been badly scratched on both pieces. The polish is in really bad shape, the heat treat may even have been ruined. This looks like a $200-$300 komonjo piece. It's a risk, particularly if the heat treat's gone.

(google didnt help me) The fuchi looks trashed. The only thing that might have value to my eye were the menuki, but I wouldn't want to count on it. Honestly, I'm fine with a $2--$300 piece, if its genuine and old. I wanted to buy it as an artifact, not for any other reason really. Attachments:

Komonjo is an eBay store that sells these kinds of things (usually in better condition though, but sometimes not!). His antiques are usually authentic Nihonto, usually gimei, and usually in pretty poor condition. His "gendaito" are made in China, and usually quite nice for reproductions, but they aren't nihonto.
