Is this something I should be worried about? This sword was in transit for a long time, so I'm not sure if this was something that occurred during shipping or if it existed long before. It appears to be fairly deep.

Sure looks like it's been there for a while there's no Rusty fingerprint around it or anything. I'd say it adds character!

It's a defect in the metal probably from forging. It's full of black rust though, so shouldn't keep eating away at it. That metal has other forging defects on it.

As long as there are no cracks emanating from the spots and they are not changing, it should be structurally sound.

Is it possible for these flaws in the steel to appear long after forging? Here is a link to the exact sword I purchased. I believe the images on the site are of my actual sword, and there's no sign of this defect. www.arms-n-armor.com/products/mary-rose-basket-hilt

No. More likely that either the focus is a bit soft and it doesn't show up or that he had a few of these at one time and the pic is not the one you bought.

It's definitely the one visible on the site, confirmed by Arms & Armor themselves. It also bears a few other telltale marks that I can recognise. I suppose it's possible they are simply not visible in the images, since they are quite low resolution. So long as it doesn't pose any risk to the blade, I'm not really worried. Thanks all, I appreciate your input.

It's sometimes hard to spot these unless you are close up. I wouldn't worry, in fact it's a sign of a hand forged blade.
