CS machetes are probably tempered to be softer and tougher than one would do it for a dedicated knife made of 1050. Higher hardness for knives is good, there are enough good steels above 1050 that aren't expensive, but you don't need a high price supersteel I think. I don't need an 1k + knife and I don't assume those collecting them don't cut much with them. So I can say why I don't buy this stuff but not why people do it.

I think there's a lot of marketing that goes into the knife market, and there are enough customers who buy into it that it continues to be worth the companies' while to do that.
There are a lot more knife people and knife mall ninjas out there than sword people/sword mall ninjas, after all.

There are a lot more knife people and knife mall ninjas out there than sword people/sword mall ninjas, after all. That's quite true. The bigger the group the more chaotic and uninformed it gets. EDIT: It has gotten better with more access to good information (without these forums of discourse like here it would be much worse I bet), but those who don't look for it will stay mall-ninjas.
I agree, you don't need supersteel, but you also don't need to spend 1000$ for one, you can get real M390 knives for under 200€. If I was a hunter or forester or anyone who needed to depend on their knife for their life, I'd definately spend the 200€, for my garden bushcrafting Mora Companions are good enough.

On the CS Black Bear Bowie...I wonder what the Rockwell on that is...it's the same machete steel as other CS products from the RSA and that can vary a lot... Around 50HRC. All of my 1055s are besides the Kopis which is like 1HRC harder, admittedly stoft for a cutter and the 1075@55HRC does fare a lot better, the cheap stainless knife still outcuts it. The 1075 feels like it gets a keener edge, so there is that.
EDIT:I think I remember the maximum hardness for 1055 is at mid 50s anyways.
I think you are right. An extra 5 HRC would make a nice difference in the kitchen though...not that I expect it would out preform X50CrMoV15, but it might not be such a poor performer in comparison. In any case HRC 50 is good for a machete.
