Decided the stock color was just too...ugly.
Used Fiebing products to Deglaze the original finish
Then removed the chape, little nails on either side pulled with small wire cutters
Applied dye per manufacturer instructions, took several coats
Then sealed with resolene to prevent dye transfer and , well, seal the dye in place. Replaced the chape and gently tapped the nails back in place using the blunt end of a screwdriver handle to avoid denting the chape.
Finished results are way more attractive than the stock color.

Love it! I really don't like the stock color, this is a big improvement.
