Hello gentleman I don't know if this posted when I first tried to open my account this morning but I have a couple of the commemorative Wilkinson swords from england. They have the gold etching on them extensively. It looks like they had some type of wax applied probably over 20 some years ago and it looks kind of bad. I'm wondering how to take it off safely so I can recoat them with my Renaissance micro crystalline wax polish. Thank you any help would be appreciated.

Start with 90% Isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth!

Slow and low heating might help too, 40 - 50 ° C.

I just take it off with some mineral oil and a microfibre cloth. Usually pretty good at loosening up the wax.

You might need to let it sit for a few minutes, if you can't clean it off right away. Put a thick coationg of oil/alcohol/poison of choice on a spot and let it work in dissolving the wax. If it does nothing you could try acetone, this should even dissolve it if it was some sort of lacquer. With the alcohols or acetone, you need to be careful around paint, leather and wood, but they don't do anything to metal, even for long periods. Alcohol does have a small percentage of water, so it could lead to rust if you leave it for half an hour or longer.
