Hello,
I have just recently got interested in swords. I have been thinking of buying a machete for a while now, but thankfully I looked up "buy swords in Canada" and learnt I can actually buy "real" functional swords here. Appears you don't even need a license, and they don't even care about your age, which is a unique experience for me as a firearms owner as well, given our strict licensing regime, that includes a safety course, test, criminal record check, personal questions, and even calls to references. LOL. I just hope Trudeau doesn't realize anyone can just go and buy a sword, at least online.
I bought a Honshu Midnight Forge Gladiator Sword. On sale for $139.99CAD, normal price $238CAD. Probably not the best sword out there, but it'll be my first, and I don't want to break the bank on the first either, from reviews I have seen it is actually a fairly good product though.
My 29th birthday is coming up at the end of February, so maybe I will get my second sword for myself then, with a bit more of a budget. I'm thinking something curved like a sabre, or a cutlass. Given the fact that I have Polish heritage, if I can find a recreation of a Polish Sabre for example, that'd be extra sweet.
Anyways, hello. I'm probably gonna be reading and learning lots here, and asking newbie questions.

Hi twiggy and welcome to the forum! A gladius is a good start. Thanks. I did want my first sword to be more practical, not too big, and something I can wear on my hip. I saw a couple videos on the Gladius. From the history, apparently yes, it was mainly used for thrusting and paired with a shield. I did learn however, that it can also cut and slice. Especially more modern takes on the Gladius design, such as the Honshu one I bought. Shadiversity did a really good video on them, and also a video where he chose a gladius as an effective sword for self-defense in modern times.

I've heard even knives of half the length can cut! My first sword was a gladius too, with the same thoughts. Now you need a viking sword!

Welcome These sabers aren’t bad; maybe a bit heavy but still okay: www.kultofathena.com/product/cold-steel-polish-saber/Amazon sometimes sells them for 200-250; maybe discounted for cosmetic factory blemishes (?) More accurate (and seemingly always smaller) Polish replicas seem to start around 1000 usd. Some customs are less, especially if used, but they tend to be a little under built, as if made for fencing rather than cavalry duty. Super useful for the dismounted slaying of water bottles, though.

I think I saw a CS polish saber being sold on the forum.
EDIT: Indeed, here: I hate that it's not an european offer, I'd take it instantly. Stupid americans, have all the nice things, gml...
