There is an upcoming contest! The contest will involve maybe questions relating to heat treating, or metallurgy, or smithing knowledge, or any number of other things. I will judge, and the prize will be a piece of known verified blade steel, probably 1084(easiest for the beginner/intermediate to heat treat) of a size that would be suitable for a short sword or a few knives, and if you forge you could get a longsword or ALOT of knives. In with the steel, which is entirely free with shipping included as the prize, might be a few other choice goodies also. This is the first of hopefully many contests, with the prizes being incentive for learning and a reward for retaining that knowledge.
It will not be allowed, once the questions are posed to simply to start a new thread asking for the answers. I keep a very watchful eye over pretty much EVERY forum on the net, and it will not be allowed to simply post the questions asking for the answers(in which case most members on other forums will not even answer anyway hehe). Each answer will be required to have a link or a note to where the information was obtained.
EVERYONE is allowed to enter, international entries will be accepted under the crux that you will have to assist in shipping. Look for the thread to come soon.

You can count me in...of course. I know just where a sword length piece of 1084 would feel right at home =D. Cris

Answering to the question would have to be via PM, surely, or else everyone would see the answer...

Would you know how to heat treat it? It would be like learning to drive with an 18 wheeler. Brenno, I forgot to mention that another rule is no leafblades may be made with the steel

I must respectfully bow out of this contest before it even starts; delivery on a sizeable piece of steel from the US to the UK would be more than the item is worth, and I know plenty of steel suppliers anyway.
Nevertheless, I eagerly anticipate the outcome of said competition. May the best smith win!

Thats really really cool. And generous besides. Ah well. No reason why I can't have a go, then. I almost hope I don't win, for your sake. That shipping bill would be hideously expensive!
