A busted up Tanto was found with Rusty the Katana in New Mexico desert. I am going to begin work on repairing the tanto saya and tsuka. The tanto blade itself must have been used as a crowbar at one time the blade was bent badly in several places. I straighten them out modestly well and now I will begin rebuilding. I cant find any magnolia in oklahoma so I think I will use red cedar to fix the bad breaks on the saya. I think it will make an interesting contrast..LOL...see pics attached photos.app.goo.gl/hrAUTu7WceCzhDMt7

I don't see any bad breaks on the saya, do you mean the slot in the side? If so, that's the slot for a kozuka, a sort of decorative utility blade. It's probably better to just leave the slot there.
