EDIT: I made this post out of ignorance, as I am still learning basics of katana, their blade designs & geometries. In hindsight I should have simply described the shape, posted pics and asked if it was normal, rather than making it seem as if Roninkatana.com had sent me something bad. Now that the SBG community has educated me on my perceived issue, I am nothing but happy with my new wakizashi from Ronin Katana!
Hello SBG community! This is my first post.
Today I received my new Ronin Dojo Pro wakizashi #2,
sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/product200.html
Which I purchased through SBG as a companion wakizashi to my cherished Cheness Kaze katana (which I waited too long on buying the matching wakizashi before Cheness shut down). Nothing but praise for the buying process through SBG and the speed & packing of Roninkatana.com. Even though it was listed for the same price on both sites, I chose to buy through SBG instead of directly, as this forum helped me to decide on the Dojo Pro and avoid the Cold Steel Mizutori which I had originally wanted.
However, I have an issue with the wakizashi I want to get the community's thoughts on; whether it's a legitimate issue/defect or if I'm nit picking:
On the wakizashi I received, the thickness of the spine is uniform the length of the blade until the yokote (where the kissaki grind begins - please forgive my use of term if incorrect), and then suddenly flares outward on both sides until the point at which the shinogiji ends, and tapers back inward to the very tip.
Basically, holding the sword straight and looking at the spine, there is a very noticeable diamond shape at the very tip that is noticeably thicker than the rest of the blade.
My question is, should I live with this (I do not have the skills to reprofile katana), or would you consider this to be a fail/dud? I am aware that in the price range this wakizashi is in, there is not going to be 100% perfection. The fact the spine at the very end of the blade has a spot that's noticeably thicker and forms a diamond really just, bugs me though. Unless this is the actual intended profile of the Dojo Pro in which case I fear I'm being ignorant, but no other blade I've had has been ground like this.
Thoughts? I wanted to present it before you before contacting SBG. Does this blade receive a no-go? Should I have gone with the Cold Steel Mizutori anyway? Thanks!
