Here's a link to a blog post at CheaperThanDirt that goes into some of the reasons for the various grip designs. It's not in depth by any stretch of the imagination, but it does give a fair introduction to the topic. blog.cheaperthandirt.com/getting-best-grips-grip-angle/Edit: There's a brief couple of lines in the linked article that explain the reason behind the grip shape for the single action Colt style revolvers. That particular shape stabilizes the grip for more accuracy with a single action trigger pull.

I watched a video where they said something about drawing from a holster and hip firing being easier with the Bisley grip. Maybe the designer just had abnormal hands.
