I forgot to mention, being signed isn't always an indicator of anything, either. Some smiths used to fake signatures of other, more famous smiths. This is called "gimei" and is not exactly a desired feature.
Japanese sword appraisal is a tricky business and requires years of study to even begin. I've never had the patience, myself.

the folks over on the Nihonto Message Board are helping as well, thanks for the tip( no pun intended) Seems like there will be an arms show not far from me in February that I may be able to get it into the hands of some knowledgably people
