Hello, this is my first time posting here. I'm currently looking to buy a cutting longsword as a gift and I'd really appreciate anyone with insight.
I'm currently eyeing the Cold Steel Competition Cutter on amazon for $200. It seems like a really good deal but I've heard negative things about Cold Steel as a brand. I'm curious if anyone who has experience with it could let me know their experience. Also, I'm open to secondhand swords so if anyone here has a decent longsword their selling for less than 200 bucks please let me know.

Welcome.
Cold Steel has some quality control issues, like rattling guards for example. If you get a well made one, it's a very good sword, though it is relatively short for a longsword.
The Hanwei/Tinker are pretty good as well, the fullered Bastard sword cuts really well and feels really light, became one of my favourites really fast.
The blades finish on the Cold Steel I like better, but you will certainly have to sharpen both before you can begin cutting.
If you want something more substantial there are the Hanwei Rheinlander, though this also comes with guard issues it seems. Then there are Windlass' Sword Of Roven (very big) and Sword of Erbach (bigger version of the CS Cutting sword more or less).
Those are 200-300$

Thank you for letting me know. The Hanwei Tinker sounds really good, and I'll need to go look up those windlass ones.
