I had a custom heavy rapier made years ago; the original blade was 37” long & 1.25” wide at the forte . . . The blade was SS (I know now!) and it broke during training. Over the years I lost the pommel and grip, but still have the swept hilt guard and I’d like to resurrect it. I’m looking at Hanwei blades; both their Bastard and Longsword blades The Longsword is a good length (34”) but may be a bit wide for my purposes here at 2” The Bastard is an inch shorter but only 1.5” wide at the hilt. Any thoughts on which would make a better blade for a cut/thrust “rapier” a’la the Munich Sword? Considerations I’ve not thought of? V

I'd say the bastard. I actually put one (fullered) on the guard I had left over from disassembling a Windlass Munich and using that blade somewhere else; loved the result.

Ive made custom one handed swords out of both blades you mentioned. The longsword blade i made into a large arming sword, and the bastard blade i made into a similar build - a cutting oriented 'rapier'
The unfullered bastard will probably be a better match for a munich style cut and thrust sword. For my build, the extra tang length was useful as it served as a narrower ricasso that fit in the rapier guard

I could absolutely see the bastard sword blade turning into a kind of Munich town guard style sword.

Thanks all! Sounds like the Bastard blade is the better fit overall! V
