Yes, it's authentic, but definitely not in the best shape! If you want to preserve it, I'd use some bone and oil on the blade to get rid of the red rust, nothing more aggressive. Beware of trying to polish it yourself, many authentic blades are ruined this way.

Hello everyone,
I was told that you might be able to help me out. I have recently come across this wakizashi and I guess I'd like to know whether or not it looks authentic. I know that she's not exactly in the best shape, but I'd still like to know. I would be extremely glad if you could give me your thoughts.

It’s missing the tsuba and seppa Blade looks legit to be traditionally made. Koshirae is Edo period Most of that rust looks very deep. It will be a miracle to get it all completely out with no tell of it there before. The blade is slender which means the rust probably got to the softer part. To polish that deep will expose the inner core that doesn’t hold such a mirrored clean finish.
