Hello Customizing Community,
I would like to add a rain guard to my Albion Ringeck. Optimally I need to put a small piece of leather under the grip leather as an "adapter" for the later sewn on rain guard. Does anyone have experience with unmounting an Albion, meaning opening the riveted knob and taking down the wooden grip? This would give me much better access the end of the grip & leather towards the guard to implement the "adapter" leather. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

The way an Albion hilt is put together you are not going to be able to undo the peen and just remove the handle. The grip is epoxied on and the leather is then glued over that. To add a rain guard you would need to grind off the peen, remove the pomel, and then basically remove the handle which would likely destroy it. I have known people that have had success removing the grip and then gently hammering the pommel until the peen gives way so you lose less material, but there is a chance of damaging the tang in the process if you're not very very careful.

there is a different style of historical rain guard which was not inserted between the grip and the cross-guard. It was 2 halves sewn together to make a cup which covered the mouth of the scabbard.

that style of rain guard doesn't even require removing the grip. there is more detail about them in the book on scabbards "Covering the Blade"
