Has anyone cord wrapped a smooth leather grip to put a texture on it? Getting it wet and wrapping it for a day or something like that? Any experiences?

It's do-able, but because there is already a finish on the leather it won't take to impression as well as if it were 'raw' unfinished leather. It will take multiple passes with whatever you use for getting it wet, as the finish will likeyl repel the water at first. But it can be done! It just doesn't turn out as 'deep' with the cord impression.

I will have to look for some sort of cord to use now.

you may need to re-dye/re-finish the leather afterwards, but Tandy sells Fiebing's Deglazer which will remove the current finish from the leather

Is the grip a bit too small maybe? Then you could add another layer of fresh leather which will take more to impressions or do a cord wrap. If you lay a foundation with self-fusing tape, you can glue to the tape but if the result fails to satisfy, you can just rip it off again without the original grip getting damaged. I am amazed how solid this feels even though it is reversible. The tape sticks to leather, wood or metal pretty hard so you can't move it sideways but lifting it off again is pretty easy.

What I would do is use the de-glazer, wrap the existing handle with cotton cord and hide glue, then add another layer of fresh, wet leather that's been appropriately skived. Hide glue has great adhesion to both cotton cord and leather. I have a sword I rehilted with cord, leather and hide glue, and it's very comfortable.

Well I used the Feibing's Deglazer on the grip a few times. It started to turn a dark gray. Then I wet the grip before wrapping it in a tight cotton cord.
Throughout the day and before bed I kept wetting the cord down and let it dry. Letting it ultimately dry overnight.
Pulling off the cord I was presented with this.
I then used some Feibings Resolene to protect the finish and put a bit of shine on it.
The cord impression did not turn out very deep, but I am very happy with how it turned out. Especially compared to the straight flat look of the original Albion Squire Line grip.
Thanks all.

Decided to do the same thing to my Albion Squire Line Clontarf. Has a bit better grip to it now.

Looks good so far, I wonder if it will go back to flat over time though.

The wrap effect is still evident and has not flattened out any. I think it is permanent as far as I can tell.
