I managed to pick up a Cold Steel Rondel for $60, and I am very surprised by the quality. My only gripe was that I hated the "Tacticool" black finish on the blade. I tried to chemically remove it, but I didn't have any luck. I ended up using 120 grit sandpaper, then progressed up in the grits. I finished with a grey scotchbrite to match my Albion. I was happy with the results. I wish I could figure out how to get it apart so I could easily return the blackened hilt furniture to the brass underneath.

This looks totally different, weird. Was it the same black lacquer they put on the machetes or blueing?

It was not blueing, but it seemed thicker, harder, and shinier than what I have seen on their machetes. Acetone, paint thinner, and vinegar did not work to remove it.

Probably some sort of powder coating, I think CS has one for their knives that is like you described. For some of these you need special paint stripper. These soften and bubble up the coating, the coating feels like gelatine after you put this stuff on, it can remove stuff that acetone can't (at least it would take the acetone too long a time to soften the paint).

I actually like the black on mine so I'm not about to remove it. ;) But yeah, by FAR my favorite rondel dagger--that triangular blade is WICKED! :P

I purchased the shorter, less ornate version (Tactical Rondel they called it) on sale for $49. Very stabby and sturdy for sure.
