I used a Windlass Toothpick Dagger, like the knife, but the grip is round and too skinny (though I still can tell where the edge is for some reason, the guard maybe), so I decided to wrap it. I used self-fusing tape as a foundation, because the wood finish is very slippery. Also I can glue stuff onto the tape and still remove it after if I don't like it with ease.
Then I glued on 2 raisers of 2mm cotton cord. And began wrapping. It isn't perfect but it feels pretty OK for 30min of work. I might redo it someday and add thicker raisers or do a thinner wrap and add leather.
I tried multiple styles of wrap on an oval saw handle as a test (chinese style, japanese style, knots), I just can't do it. So I gave up and went with being basic. Seems I am just not built for intricate work, also I had some "help". She took a different cord halfway through the room while I wasn't looking....
Any input welcome. So should I treat the wrap with something now, wax for example?

Hey that looks really nice and I bet it feels good too!
If you wanted to make sure it stayed stuck down you can spray it with clear polyurethane spray paint, when that soaks in it really hardens up the wrap.

I've become a huge fan of wrapping grips with hemp or jute, and (in fact every 2-3 layers) soaking in diluted Titebond III. (Or, a little more historic, hide glue, then waterproofing the top layer with shellac, maybe linseed oil if I'm ambitious.) But in any case I like low-toxicity, low VOC stuff these days. The upshot though being I've really come around to like the more "rustic" look to visible cord wrapped grips I loved when a kid, reminiscent of images from Conan comics, etc., compared to really pretty leather wraps. And as long as they hold up and hold together, hey, why not?

Just thought of this, I have this spray you use to make shoes and jackets waterproof, do you think this might work too? I donn't want the wrap to be really hard, though one of my Windlass daggers has an interesting coating, any ideas what that is? Feels a bit rubbery. Maybe Fiebing's Edge Kote? I really want to finish a good leather wrap someday, but it always ends up wrinkled. Soo many projects, so little patience.... At least this seems to hold.
EDIT: I decided to it tomorrow, the single strand riser just doesn´t feel good, too sharp.
