I am trying to upgrade my scabbard game from wood core to lined wood core. The first one I made used a felt liner (a red felt from Crazy Crow Trading Company that is 30% wool). I did have issues with rust patches on the blade after a week or so (Arms & Armor Saxon Parrying dagger), which surprised me since I have Windlass daggers which have no signs of rust after more than a decade in the supplied leather sheath.
For those who use felt, what type of felt do you use? Is 100% wool better (I have some 100% wool felt, but the 30% wool felt is a lot denser)?
I will post a picture later this weekend.

I once lined a scabbard with sheepskin and had major rust issues after.
Now i use synthetic felt for my scabbards and don't have any rust issues.
Soaking the felt in oil before gluing up the scabbard halves might help

I now use felt tape (like the one used to prevent squeaking). I find it very comfortable as you can just cut out the length you need and it adheres wonderfully to wood. Regarding the rust spots, this might be caused by the wood glue leaking into the interior of the scabbard. It have had the issue previously, although in my case it was just a little bit of oxidation and I managed to get rid of it by shaving off the glue from parts of the felt and replacing it. Bit more difficult to do once you glue both sides of the scabbard together... But no issues from the felt tape as the oxidation only came with the small glue spots.

I was reading one of Peter Johnsson's posts and realized where it all went wrong. I used the wood glue (either Elmer's Wood Glue Max or Tightbond II/III) to glue the felt to the core. According to Peter's posts and the discussion, that may be OK with Tightbond, but it isn't OK with II or III. He uses contact cement to attach the felt.
Now I know what to do differently next time.
