Heyhey.
I've had this Windlass falchion for many years but it's always been in storage instead of being on display like my other swords. It had a few things I didn't like about it. The original grip was awful. The pommel was loose and would turn too much so it was crooked. It was VERY blunt.
So I finally decided to do something about the issues. I wanted to sharpen it and make the fullers wider. Also a new grip and some mods to the crossguard.
Here is a pic of an original (not mine).
I didn't like the round ends of the crossguard so I sawed them off.
Here's the original grip and modded crossguard.
Then the fuller.
Here is the fuller and some sharpening done. I sharpened the false edge also.
Here are some grip progress pics.
I left a reinforced tip.
Last pic of the grip for now.
Everything is still wip. It's not sharp yet but it's close. Still a lot of things to do.
Original weight was 1304 g. At the moment it's 1267 g.
Grip is made of ash.

Looks awesome! Looking forward to seeing the rest. Are you planning to wrap the grip in leather? And are you going to make a scabbard as well?

Thanks. No leather for the grip. I just stained it brown with some very old wood oil that I had.
I have the original scabbard so probably not making another one.
This sword had no distal taper originally and it felt very heavy. I have been sanding it for weeks now and I really need some power tools...
Current weight is 1258 g.

Nothing wrong with a bit (a lot) of elbow grease. But I feel your pain. I personally find sanding a blade quite therapeutic. It's a really fun and exciting project in any case. And if you ever want a fancier scabbard, you can always make one later. Good luck!

That is more appealing than the original. Congratulations.

Finally finished this one. After extensive reprofiling I got the weight down from 1304 g (2,87 lbs) to 1180 g (2,6 lbs). Pob moved from 13 cm (5,12") to 10 cm (3,94") from crossguard. Now it feels awesome.
No secondary bevel only very slight apple seed. I bet this would cut superbly. And it rings like a bell. So addictive.
I blued the pommel and crossguard. Pommel turned out very good on the first try but I couldn't get the crossguard to darken evenly no matter what I did. I'm guessing it's different material than the pommel.

This sword had no distal taper originally and it felt very heavy. I have been sanding it for weeks now I distal tapered a hardened sword blade once, *shudder*... I never wanna experience those weeks again. Good work on that sharpened crowbar.
