Based on historical Boarding Axes used by 19th century sailors to chop through doors, cut through rigging and for close combat fighting, with the Axe blade opposed by a utilitarian hook. This hook was used to clear obstacles, assist with climbing and of course, to deliver an armor piercing attack.
