For you war movie fans I discovered this one that some may enjoy. It stars Gary Cooper and David Niven for you old farts out there. The story is typical Hollywood, and takes place in the Philippines in 1906 shortly after the Philippine Insurrection was over but some unruly Moros were rebelling. What I liked about it were the props. It clearly showed the US dress at the time. There was action involving shields, swords, spears, Krag and Springfield rifles. Not to mention the Colt .38s used at the time and more. Remove the ! at the head of the link to watch.

The rafting down the river scenes, and the spear trap are priceless adventure show BS like I grew up watching on TV in the 1950's. The same with the hero having a kid sidekick, and some of the inaccurate props, like a Javanese keris on the Datu. OTOH, the US weapons and gear are accurate, as were the punji pit, the pig skin thing, and the grim reality of cholera.
It's much fun to watch it with a real juramentado barong lying on the table.

😊 Glad you enjoyed it. I loved it. The CO at times was wearing a M1902 sabre. Fortunately, he didn’t try to use it. I found the scene where the ambushed detail tasked with blowing the dam was found with that CO, a LT, buried up to his neck leaving him for the ants was found interesting.

That was an interesting scene. The camera doesn't focus on the LT and cuts away quick, but it's still definitely there. It was a good movie.

Ah yes, movies from way back in the dark ages when the first thing they did was to write a good story, then put the story to film.
Excellent movie, one of my favorites. A copy should be in every gentleman's video library.

I can tell you are from the old school. They don't make them like that these days.

Another old Gary Cooper war movie I love is Sergeant York. I was one of a few people in my film history class years back who wasn't bored by it. The 1903 Springfield is definitely one of the most beautiful battle rifles of all time, but most historians agree he used a 1917 Enfield during his Medal Of Honor action in real life. And on a tangent, apparently the Chauchat machine gun wasn't "as" hated as is commonly believed, being light enough to be relatively man portable, and several survivors of the Lost Battalion credited it with saving their lives in the Argonne. Guess it depends on if you got one that worked, with the poor quality control being a big issue, as well as shoddy rechambering into a different round than designed for.

I saw the York movie years back and liked it although disappointed later when I was to learn that he actually used a M1917 and not the ’03 as in the movie. I loved the ’03, it was my first rifle. As for the Chauchat, I’ve no experience with it but it couldn’t have been all that bad with that many countries adopting it. It was the most produced LMG during WWI. My guess is that it worked well for testing but malfunctioned in real life due to the muddy trenches. And arm chair experts played that up, probably committing some plagiarism. One must consider the need and what was available at the time. The BAR hadn't appeared.

I can tell you are from the old school. They don't make them like that these days. I am "old skool" simply because I think that movies, theater, etc. should be story or character driven. And that's something I haven't seen from the entertainment industry in decades. But all is not lost. I was surprised by "(Word for "cat" that begins with "P" that is edited out by the AI) in Boots 2: The Last Wish". Quite frankly, it's magnificent. And it gives a small glimmer of hope that we might see more of this kind of quality. If you haven't seen it, you should. No need to see the first movie, part 2 stands alone all by itself (which is rare again these days). And it has swords in it SPANISH SPLINTER!
