If soo, who should I contact about it?

I'm just curious, would it be possible to give someone sayyy a Cheness katana and have them make the sori deeper without too much work and still have it be just as functional? If soo, who should I contact about it? I would say no. There's a thread in the maker's section about forge welding a cracked blade that goes into the reasons why. They're much the same as why you really wouldn't/couldn't adjust the sori on a finished blade. First you'd need to reshape it, problematic at best on an already finish ground blade. Then you'd need to redo the heat treat...which poses many of the same issues. It also depends on whether it's through hardened or differentially hardened...with through hardening being a tiny bit more realistic. Let me rephrase all this. You could do it, if you were able to convince a maker with salt pots (a standard charcoal or coal forge would simply make a mess of it...hell even propane really...scale is nobodies friend) that you wanted to spend probably double what you paid for the sword to get it reshaped with more sori. Then add to that the expense/effort of repolishing it, and a new saya... You would be better off ordering a bare blade from someone like James Raw for $500 or so, with your spec for sori...and then doing all of the other things you want to it. You'd have a better blade, better heat treat, and in the end it would be more valuable as it was a custom rather than a hopped up Cheness =). Hope that helps! Cris

I also know that James Raw was a bit tight for cash for awhile and was selling blades for a good deal less than his asking price on his webpage. That may still be the case. The only way to find out is to ask. Explain your situation, tell him you have NO intention of insulting him, but that you heard you might be able to help him out while getting a good deal for yourself as well. I think he'd be sympathetic, and even if he said no...I doubt he'd be insulted. It would be good to have the money on hand though. I lost out on an INCREDIBLE deal for a totally custom sword hand built for me, due to not having the cash on hand. 27" Hira Zukiri by James Raw, hand polished, fully mounted (silver habaki and fittings), navy doe skin ito over black same, brand new...$1300 =/. Freaking economy issues! It was a special deal through a friend who had contacts with polishers etc. Also included was local training with an incredible swordsman for $50 a month. It still hurts me that I ended up having to let my friend down on that deal. He put a lot on the line for it and it would have been a nice thing for both of us. Believe me, having cash on hand is a real life saver on occasion. Cris

James is often up for offers... and sometimes has Bill sell them on ebay for him... It's worth the time to shoot an email to Bill with an offer and have him take it to James... Bill is James's link to the world...James lives on the edge of the wild... out there in the sticks away from modern society, and without technology such as TVs and computers.

Yes I know this, I've already contacted him prior to that post you quoted.

I got lucky with my Rawblade. I contacted him about a week or two before he raised his prices. My 20" naginata naoshi style wakizashi that I proposed was originally quoted at $800, with full polish, but Bill managed to talk me down to $640. (Okay so I went into it hoping it wouldn't be more than $500 and when I expressed this after hearing the estimate, they met me halfway and I dove into it)
Then suddenly I was out of money. I got very lucky, though, that they were so understanding and agreed to set it aside while they worked on other projects and I'd get back to them when I had the money. Unfortunately, Mr. Raw went ahead and finished it before I did. For a while I was in danger of losing it to eBay, but since the trend there had been that these things go for so much lower than Mr. Raw would typically charge, I managed to convince them to wait just a bit longer, and we agreed to send partial payments via international money order until I was paid. Made things much easier.
Nothing up on eBay now, but it never hurts to check every so often.
These guys are both really fine fellows, they'll work with you if you hold your end (which I have barely managed to do...).

Well I've run out of money before the project even started, this was a really bad time to try and afford one.
