Hi all, I recently got this hunting sword back from an attic found in northern Italy. I found no signatures or marks anywhere, and I believe the blade has been shortened. The leather scabbard was found in the same building, but I can't guarantee that it belonged to the same blade, even if it did fit well. Could you help me identify it? -Sword 58 cm Total lenght; -Blade 43 cm long; - Blade wide 2,7 cm at the base; - Blade thickness 0,90 at the base; - Blade thickness 0,3 at the tip;

Where was it found? It looks like the handle has been dyed greenish, which was done in the US in the 1700s (but maybe it was done elsewhere, too). How fun to find a sword!

It was found in an old country house in northern Italy. Yes, the handle is greenish yellow, I confirm.

Very nice and interesting find with outstanding etch/engraving work. I cannot see whether the grip furniture is silver or silver plated. If the former, there could (should) be very amd I mean very, small hallmarks punched in. The blade snapped some time ago, but it looks like (I see fresh white steel?) the break was recently worked on. Anyway, maybe if you go here :: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/71003/hunting-swords you may find something to help you out. There is a lot of info in the notes. Looking at the grip I do think it was made of ivory of some kind. The staining of bone grips I know about, ivory not so much. Maybe the green here is the result of it laying in a humid environment. Old house, roof leaking and Northern Italy notorius for much winter rain. In the end this does not matter much. The beautiful grip survived in good condition. Take care not to place it in a very dry environment lest it will crack. Maybe longtime store the sword with the grip sealed in a plastic bag for now. And clean it and feed it some Ren wax. Cheers.
