Tramontinas are made in Brazil and have a good reputation. Will need sharpening for sure and if wood scales will probably need modifying for best fit. I have none as Bellotas can be bought locally for less than the shipment and customs on those. I do not know the type of clear coating used. And by all means after customizing and getting to know those machetes start a thread. No need to wait until all machetes are completed.

I'm sure it does depend on the particular metal, how it's heat treated, etc. but my understanding is that most European style swords are made to be fairly flexible, and weight closer to the hilt, more distal taper, so they are more agile, whereas katanas are built to be stiffer, weight closer to the tip, little distal taper, to have more power in the cut. I'm sure there are very thin katanas made of spring steel, and longswords made of steel that can be very stiff, but that was my understanding.
