Preferably Chinese, but any origin will work.
For her SCA persona, my wife has decided to be a sort of Chinese Chick in Chainmail. Her preferred art is with the spear or polearm.
So I was looking for a weapon that would be absolutely fearsome in a 5 ft tall Asian chick-in-chainmail's hands. Got to be battle-ready. Got to be affordable. And absolutely Must be as "scary" as possible.
Any suggestions?

What would fit in affordable for you. I would suggest a kwan-dao, those things can be very nasty.

I have a wider range than most, I imagine, but I'm not looking to spend the $750 that Hanwei wants...

SCA don't use steel, unless your group is different?
How about a monk's spade or something of that nature?

This is for her costume, not for her actual fighting.

That's a much more reasonable price. I'm not sure it's quite Scary enough, though.

Just what do you mean by "scary"? Perhaps you're looking for something that is ranging more toward a fantasy sword than a historical sword? I don't know of any Chinese bladed weapons that looked "scary" save for an infantry pole-arm that was used by the Qin armies... of course that looked a lot like a halberd so even then it wasn't really scary looking.
As for what I'd be afraid of - I'd really respect and fear a person who carried a jian and could use it effectively in combat. While the blade itself isn't very threatening in looks - it is the possibility of what that blade could do in well trained hands that is quite intimidating.

Hmmm, I'm not extremely experienced with staff weapons and the like, but I'd suggest one of the following: A Kwan Dao can be quite "scary" in combat, if you can afford a decent one, but a great alternative to the Kwan Dao is the Naginata. It's one of my favorites as far as staff weapons go, and you can get one off of CoA for $500. Another good choice would be a Yari, although I'm not sure where to find a good place to get one of them. Good luck finding something.

Thanks for the ideas, but I think I have it narrowed to either a military version of a good old fashioned boar spear or a Quan Dao. Just have to find one I can afford or save more money until I can afford more sword...

The cold steel boar speer can be had for 55.00 to 65.00 depending on where you look. probably less if you just got the head and mounted it yourself. I know I wouldnt want to be on the wrong end of that thing.

I completely missed this post. I suggest you make the tittle of threads more descriptive. You might also want to post this sort of question in the "sword training" section because it is more likely to get the attention of SCA / WMA/ Stage people. What does she need the sword for? Court? Rapier? Cut&Thrust? For court she can wear a sharp sword in most kingdoms. For fighting Rapier and Cut&Thrust Alchem makes some Asian weapons that are SCA legal. I don't see anything that is Chinese specific but he he is good about making modifications. I am sure he could get you a proper hilt. www.alcheminc.com/longhilts.htmlBefore she goes spending money on stuff she should talk to some of the Mongolian Households in the SCA. The will be able to advise her on what she can make herself and what to buy. The are a number of households. I personally know Silver Horde to be very friendly. They are also very flexible in that you don't have to be Mongolian Persona. They are based in NY, but you should be able to get a lot of info by email. www.viahistoria.com/SilverHorde/main.htmlDark Horde is another Mongol House hold you may want to contact for info. I have no personal experience with this group. www.greatdarkhorde.org/frames.htmlSCA don't use steel, unless your group is different? How about a monk's spade or something of that nature? SCA does use steel in Rapier and Cut&Thurst. They also use real arrows in Archery, real axes and knives in throwing contests and real horses in equestrian events ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) The Rattan fighting is just the oldest and most popular combat they do.

Thanks, tsafa, but no sword. She doesn't want one and she's a spear fighter by training and natural talent anyway.
Actually, now that the price has come down, I'm pretty sure I'll be getting her one of Adam Hsu's Quan Dao...
