SOLD: This is an unusual Imperial Japanese Army Officer's Sword that shows features of both the Type 8 (1875) and Type 19 (1886) pattern officers swords and may be regarded as transitional. This sword is from the Plimpton collection and is published on pages 64-65 of Swords of the Emperor by John E. Plimpton. A materially identical example is also published on pages 62-63 of Jim Dawson's Swords of Imperial Japan, 1868-1945. I agree with Dawson's identification of this sword as a company grade officer sword. The sword is in generally very good condition. The hilt furniture is in excellent condition. The blade shows dark staining along its length (see natural light pics), but is otherwise sound. The scabbard shows patches of corrosion and loss to the chrome plating. The cutting edge is 25.5". The overall length of the sword and scabbard is 35".
SOLD I've also listed this sword on eBay but its offered cheaper here.
