Forever ago, Rurouni Kenshin was one of the biggest swordy anime, known all over the world. It inspired many to acquire their first katana, and was so popular, almost every manufacturer at the time started producing their own "sakabatou" (reverse-blade sword), some better than others, of course.
Anyway, this season, it's getting a reboot. I've just finished the second episode, and so far it's a pretty faithful retelling of the original story. Part of me hopes, this time, they'll finish the whole manga, without rushing or fillers, but I also expect it to just kind of end at the usual 12-13 episodes, probably finishing three or four arcs from the original, at most.
Curious who else is watching, if anybody.

Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite anime/manga series of all time. To this day I'm still salty over the fact that it got cancelled because of the lackluster filler but Naruto gets 300+ episodes of filler and they get to finish? But I'm genuinely torn between my love for the series and my distaste for the author. I'm still mulling it over. . Funnily enough, one of my favorite fights in a show about swordsmen was always the duel between the fist fighters Sanosuke and Monk Anji during the Kyoto arc. That fight had me tearing up as a young teen.

Honestly, I'd forgotten about the author's, shall we say, poor history. Still a huge fan of the series and won't let the person stop me from appreciating the art, but I understand a lot of people won't touch it now.
I remember that fight, if only vaguely, but it was definitely one of the better. I'm not sure it tops Kenshin v Saito in the dojo, though. That one was maybe a little too good.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the reboot, but we'll see where it actually goes.

yeah, they did like 4 maybe 5 live action movies.
someone just watched it and told me it was good.
they also did a reboot of the anime of season 2 about a decade ago that i never watched.
Anji vs Sanosuke was an awesome fight as pretty much all the fights of Saito. And Kenshin's master, Hiko Seijuro.

So the new reboot just did the Kenshin vs Saito fight at Kamiya Dojo and I can't say I was impressed. I remembered the original series feeling much more intense, so I found the scene on YouTube and gave it another watch. Well, what garbage I could find on YouTube.
It was so different. Okay, my first, immediate thought was "Wow, was the art really this bad?", but then the background music hit, and then the fight started. Yes, it was more intense.
I'm a little disappointed. Oh well.

i'm about 3 episodes in, it's good but i'm not gagging for it. mainly because I was fine with the old one.
movies are decent. they are not fantastic but they are better than a lot of the semprini chanbara samurai/ninja movies that come out. i havent watched the last 2 though i watched the first earlier this yr again meaning to do a run of all 5.
2nd season had some great fights besides the initial Kenshin vs Saito. Even Sano vs Saito was fun. Hiko vs the Giant was great, Saito vs blind dude was good, even Sojuro vs Kenshin. Kenshin vs Chicken man was also good. Oniwaban were good besides whats his face with the dual kodachi/wakazashi.

I've decided I'll go ahead and give it a watch. At the end of the day, the series as a whole just means too much to me. Just waiting to finish the One Piece arc I'm on. i'm about 3 episodes in, it's good but i'm not gagging for it. mainly because I was fine with the old one. movies are decent. they are not fantastic but they are better than a lot of the semprini chanbara samurai/ninja movies that come out. i havent watched the last 2 though i watched the first earlier this yr again meaning to do a run of all 5. 2nd season had some great fights besides the initial Kenshin vs Saito. Even Sano vs Saito was fun. Hiko vs the Giant was great, Saito vs blind dude was good, even Sojuro vs Kenshin. Kenshin vs Chicken man was also good. Oniwaban were good besides whats his face with the dual kodachi/wakazashi. The Kyoto villains were some of my favorite bad guys growing up. Great variety of designs, weapon skills and quirks. I read the manga many years later and what I didn't know was that the scythe chick in the anime was actually a cross dressing scythe guy in the manga. And when Kaoru and Yahiko don't believe him, he proceeds to flash them to prove the point and mentally scar them... all in the middle of a fight. Made me laugh like a maniac. Starting to get nostalgic now. I do hope that this means that the final Jinchu arc gets properly adapted. I seem to recall an OVA adaption of it but I also seem to recall it being utter dog crap.

you must have missed it in the anime because they have a scene where he tells Yahiko and Kaoru that he is a dude and that's why he has to work hard to get Shishio's favor compared to his token gf (that later takes being stabbed so Shishio can get a strike in and she feels she is finally of use to Shishio)
Yahiko and Kaoru don't get flashed in the anime
Okama/scythe also means gay/LGBT in Japanese.

Huh... been a long while since I read the manga and longer since I've seen the show. Thanks for the correction though. I wonder if I'm remembering a censored version for Toonami. They tended to take a hatchet to that kind of subject matter. That, or my brain is slowly tuning into mush.

I don't remember whether I remember that character. Reading about it strikes as familiar but I certainly forgot at some point.
I was trying to find comparisons between the original and new anime, and I hadn't realized the original was run in 1996. Granted, the English dub was a bit later than that, but I didn't think it was that much more than 20 years old, never mind almost 30.
I'm also hoping they adopt the full series this time, but don't think it's likely. I do remember the OVA that adapted the last arc of the manga, and it was definitely disappointing. There's also the prequel/sequel OVA series that was done very well, but I don't think it was ever considered canon?

kenshin.fandom.com/wiki/Honj%C5%8D_Kamatarii watched the DVD's subtitles. We bought or rented them from a local comic shop with an anime section way back in the day. in the live action films, the character is played by a female so maybe they wrote out the LGBT angle. I don't remember the character at all in the movies off the top of my head
