Hi I have just bought a Swedish M1840 cavalry sabre manufactured by Alex Coppel of Solingen. It is stamped on the spine of the blade and on the guard with a crown over C. Is there a date range this stamp was used? I'm trying to get an idea of when the sabre was made. Thanks

Hi I think what you have is Norwegian, not Swedish! The Swedes "ruled" Norway from the 19th to early 20th century. Of course that statement is a gross generalization and I will leave it to the Pellius's and Uhlans to give you the longer version. BUT all that being said, they used the same inspection stamp as the Swedish monarch was up top. www.antique-swords.com/I77-1870-Swedish-Norwegian-Cavalry-Sabre.html <---- Is a similar example to yours Why not Swedish you might ask? Here are some links showing the official Swedish models of sabres so you can see for yourself! The Norwegian one is a little unfinished. Granted, it very much COULD be Swedish but I've never seen anything similar and I have to, in absence of evidence, go towards Norway in my assessment as that is the rational option in my mind. Either way it's a bit of an odd duck but I will give you all the evidence I can for the moment. www.schweden-kavallerie.de/www.hhogman.se/vapen_blank.htmnorskevaapen.no/

I did wonder when I looked at the Swedish Cavalry swords site and saw no mention of an M1840. I've seen a couple of these swords advertised and sold on UK dealer sites as Swedish (obviously due to the inspection stamp) but I suppose Alex Coppel made thousands of these blades and they ended up in multiple countries. The Norwegian/Swedish example you give looks identical to mine, except mine has the grip wire missing. Attachments:
