Fellow forum dwellers, is it allowed to clean the blade with 95% alcohol after sharpening/cutting tests? I want to clean the edge of any impurities before applying Ballistol oil. A friend told me yesterday that alcohol would cause discoloration on the blade, which makes no sense. But being a noob, I would highly appreciate input from more experienced people.
Thanks!

Ive used hand sanitiser to strip the oil off a sword blade in preparation for some mustard etching. The % was probably more like 70%, but no, it did not discolor the blade.

I have used 96% ethanol, 99% isopropanol and acetone without any problems. If you oil it right after, there should not be any problems. I have also used turpentine on carbon steel (to remove a stupid sticker), this I would not recommend since the turpentine will stay on for a while and might be a problem when applying oil right after.
I would not use hand sanitizer or denaturated alcohol because of the additives. Especially hand sanitizer can have things in it that might be bad for steel, but if you oil it straight away, even this should not be a problem.

I’ve had no negative experiences using alcohol on blades. OTC alcohols are not pure, hence 70% isopropanol, and others that are labelled denatured. So, theoretically one could encounter an alcohol with an additive that may have a negative effect although I’ve never experienced this. Lately I’ve been using Windex to remove factory grease, but still keep a supply of alcohol on hand.

70 percent rubbing alcohol is best. Standard rubbing alcholol. And it is good to do with a low lint cloth for the alcohol wiping and then another low lint cloth to apply the mineral pil coating after that. The alcohol helps clean everything off before a new application of oil

In addition to alcohol, if you get sap or blood on the blade, use a little soap and water first to get the crud off, then use the alcohol to towel off the water and any grease, then oil the blade. Water dissolves things that alcohol won't, and vice versa.
