Here’s a new discovery (2015) that puts a different outlook on shield construction. The video itself has only been out for 8 days. The subject shield is from the iron age, made approximately 400-200 BC, and found in England.

very interesting
now they need to make another replica to test against the iron age weapons it would have faced (e.g. the NOVA bullets vs armor video recreation of Greenwich armor, Scottish targes vs musket ball or Tod's Arrows vs Armor videos)

Absolutely fascinating! Thanks for posting this.
The general shape very much reminds me of a Germanic hexagonal shield. Which may have another name. That's just the one I'm familiar with.

Very interesting. I lost count of how many different plants/trees they needed to use to make it. 5? 6? I have also thought it interesting that the formula for making Iron/steel for swords was such a closely guarded secret that they still had to make shields from bronze and leather/wood/other materials for hundreds of years.
