Nice. I'm of mixed opinion on the deerskin ito, but I like the way the whole package comes together and the blade itself is very nice.

Oh, my goodness -- that's gorgeous. From the pics, the quality & fit of the fittings is stellar. The habaki is beautiful. I'm not a fan of leather or deerskin wraps, but this one looks incredibly well done. Beautiful sword.

Beautiful, love the habaki and tsuba. Wish I was still in the katana market, wanted to give them a shot a few years but they closed their commissions. What's the materials used in the habaki?

Very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. The tsuba could be replaced or cleaned up a bit so that it's not so obviously a cast reproduction.

Habaki is solid silver with a gold emblem embedded in it. Not sure what makes up the black parts of the emblem.

Maybe the photos are a bit misleading, but those lines you see aren't flash lines, they're angle changes. They're a bit irregular too, not just down the center. There are no lines at all in the internal cutouts. This tsuba is iron, rather than the die-cast zinc or brass commonly seen on production swords. Doesn't mean this tsuba isn't cast, it's just not obvious to me.

I agree the tsuba is not cast, the edge looks obviously hammered.

I have seen that exact tsuba model (also the fuchi-kashira) on various Japanese iaito. This is not a bad thing. I have a slightly different iron tsuba taken off of another Japanese iaito (which had the exact same kind of surface lines around the edges). I sanded off the decorative patterns and antiqued it using salt and hyrogen peroxide. Fun little project.

Beautiful sword. The only part that seems like it required more attention is the outer rim of the tsuba. I personally would have wanted it filed to machined-like perfection. But, this was obviously a handmade piece, and I would guess they were invoking the Japanese aesthetic of retaining the handmade look so as not to look "too perfect". From either perspective - still a beautiful katana. Good luck with it.

I’m sorry to say that I missed this earlier. That is gorgeous, one of the few that has everything that I would look for in mine, if I had one. I’m envious. Thanks for sharing.

it seems higotora no longer take orders. Unfortunately their owner passed away about a year ago. They're working to complete any works in progress, but they won't be taking any new orders.

No, Akamatsu Taro Kanetsugu is still very much alive. The Higotora owner who passed was Yasuaki Wakita. He was responsible for coordinating the production of the sword.
