It’s fine. No need for panic. All you need is a PC from the mid-90s and the happy confidence that interstellar, faster than light, alien technology is compatible with Windows and can be hacked by using a floppy disc.
Take that, E.T.

All this started up again with the Chinese spy balloons. Do you realize if you throw a pie plate in the air and it falls before you can make out what it is it's officially a UFO. Slow Joe will call out intercept fighters then fall off his chair.

Take that, E.T. Well, Independence Day did have Data in Area 51. Nerd alert: I don't think those locust like aliens had faster than light ability, instead, more like the ships in Close Encounters, traveling through interstellar space like a school of jellyfish on the ocean.

Anyone remember Y2K when at the stroke past midnight everything was going to shut down ? No computers, power, your bank accounts were going to freeze. The Chicken Little people panicked and bought up generators and all kinds of survival supplies all of which was sold at bargain prices after that. Then we had the big toilet paper shortage. I notice there's shelves full now because all the Chicken Little people are still wiping their asses with their ten year supply. If the mice didn't beat them to it.

In fairness, I know two people involved in sorting out that Y2K thing and they both pulled serious shifts, like 14 hour days, trying to patch everything leading up to it. The reason stuff didn’t happen was because there were thousands of people behind the scenes working flat out to ensure it didn’t happen. I’d argue society functions because there are millions upon millions of people across the globe all beavering away quietly without anyone noticing. Long may it continue!

As one of the programmer/analysts who spent FIVE FRIGGING YEARS working to prevent Y2K from becoming a disaster, you're welcome.
