automotive springs should be a steel close to 5160 if they are not pre-1950s. Are these USA or foreign springs? They should make good blades if properly heat treated.

You could use some mild steel at first to get into it again, it would need less force to hammer it into shape. Then go for the leaf spring. You also could use something like 1075 or 1084, you need less heat for these than the 5160 as far as I know.

You've got some good answers here already. I agree something like 1075 would be a good choice. Keeps a finer edge than 1045 and 1060, but not as hard to work with as 1095.
