Not to beat a dead horse, but should I be worried about never getting my custom Huawei? 1 year ago this month I ordered a model HW529 but with a slightly longer tsuka, black silk, and a sparkle black saya etc. and haven't heard many updates or reviews here for a bit. Anyone recently receive anything from them? Cheers

For some reason, this keeps happening over and over again. A production sword company or even a custom smith becomes popular. Everyone raves about them. Then, they start missing promised deadlines/estimates. Excuses start piling up. Then the lies. Then just ghosting. Over and over again. Sigh....

I recently almost bought a sword from Huawei, but got this response via email:
"We have a backlog of orders that will take several months to clear. We are also suspending pre-sale orders at this time."

Hi...
I ordered...and got...my Huawei in 2019. I guess this is before they became super popular. I had great comms with Jackie and even my special wish, a saya with ratan, was fullfilled. Delivery time back then was about 6 weeks. Now I am in the market for another one but the stories I read up and down the river are not promissing. I may need to shop elsewhere even though I do not like to.

You could never convince me to deal with this stuff nowadays. I used to buy from them. A year wait time was annoying but understandable. Now it's becoming common to hear about a 2-3 year wait, with zero communication, random refunds, etc. IDC what their excuse is, they could at least respond. They aren't getting hundreds of emails, I don't believe it. If they are then it's from the same 20 people asking where their stuff is. Maybe a few dozen emails at most "Jackie" doesn't make the swords, and if he/she/it/zhe/they/zit does make the swords, then thats yet another lie because their emails always say "hi friend, yes good friend, I will communicate this to the smith". So Jackie isn't doing anything other than answering emails. I seriously doubt they do any of the custom work. Probably order the materials and supplies? Again we can only speculate.
The point of my rant is that, we don't know who makes them, don't know who we communicate with, don't know when we are getting a response, don't know when we are getting the sword, don't know if we will get punished and get a sudden refund if we send more than two questions per year, we are fearful of asking for an update once every 10 months for fear they will just randomly refund, or maybe not get a refund at all? Who knows. At this point it's insanity to give them money. "Ohhh but they have nice geometry and polish, who knows about the heat treat, it's shiny! It cuts milk jugs and soft mats, it must be good! And MY sword came out well, and IM okay with the 2 year wait time with no responses, which makes your argument invalid and silly". I'd rather buy from a vendor like Sinosword or hanbon, whos a fraction of the quality but at least respects the business relationship enough to at least respond. Or a good custom maker that maybe has some flaws but good communication and at least a functional weapon.
Take your own risk, but every couple weeks we will keep seeing threads like this and more and more people will begin to regret placing an order. recommending this brand is literally doing damage to the sword community at this point yet some people still won't add them to the naughty list of brands for various reasons. Imagine if you waited three years for your medium quality sword. The likelihood of you passing away before you ever receive it is moderate, lol.

If it's anything like my stock HW529 I'm going to be so stoked when it arrives. Here are the specs I requested. I'd love to contact them and change the hamon to suguha but don't want to get "dropped"..
Custom: -HW529 -28.75 or 29 cm tsuka length, and sufficient nakago for 2 mekugi pins -Chu-kissaki (geometric) 5cm -High quality mokko higo iron tsuba -wave theme fuchi, kashira and koi fish menuki f -Copper habaki/seppa like HW529 -White samegawa with emperor nodes age / patina the white samegawa with subtle light stain for antique appearance -Black real silk ito and sageo -Black gloss saya with light metallic sparkles inside black finish (like HW540 saya), dark buffalo horn koiguchi, kurogata, and kojiri -2 mekugi peg for safety during practice -entire edge and kissaki is very sharp.

if their brand name ever really loses too much reputation, they will probably just rebrand and try to differentiate enough that most people won't pick up on it
tbh, we've seen a handful of burned competitors but will it ever be enough for them to rebrand?

I ordered the HW540 katana back in may of 2022 and didn't receive it until March of this year.. while the delivery date was pushed back a few times for different reasons, Jacky pretty good with communication so I remained patient. Eventually they delivered an awesome katana which I would say made it worth the wait in my case.

Cool! Any pics?
I have an order that's around the 2 year mark. This post was a good reminder and I just sent them an email. My hope hasn't completely run out, but it's getting low.

A friend ordered a top line Huawei a couple years (or 3?) ago. Took over a year then. He very happy with it. After buying 4 Huawei's over the years, none recently, I switched to Jkoo/Sinosword...my experience has been good blades, decent furniture, often "blade in saya" rattle. Relatively affordable prices, especially their "seconds" (flaws so discounted)

Has anyone received a sword or any communication in this time?

Good luck (seriously)! Good swords the best finished nakago's around IMO you will be happy with yours if and when it comes It seems the case that Huawei is shrinking...used to offer not just spring and T10, but also really nice folded (1095/T10 in one blade...layers). And wakizashi's (still got mine) A shame. BTW, as for Sino/Jkoo look at this $500 katana marked down to $200usd due to what looks like a small forging flaw. I got a really nice Jkoo sanmei katana blade for $100usd due to a carbon pocket on the kissaki added another $100 for the furniture. Been happy with it. ... www.sinosword.com/Heavy-Discount.html#!/JKOO-Kizu-flaw-Soshu-kitae-laminated-koKatana-for-discount-sale/p/601676670/category=46839385 .... If not that I have around a dozen Jkoo/Sino's and been procastinating a review on my latest, I'd buy it for myself. Would though, pay extra for a full rayskin wrap tsuka if doable. (real reason is the wife said no more swords....bummer!) RinC

The furniture is not my first choice, my favorite is R66 (iron, fish theme) which I like the tsuba of because it was not a flat tsuba but scalloped in that the edges/rim is thicker than the interior...kind of cool. Hhhmmm, come to think of it, maybe also a spare saya...nice (and not expensive) to get two saya's at time of ordering (at least on Jkoo/Sino custom menu sword orders) One plain jane saya to just use and one fancy for display purposes (and hopefully pretty enough that the wife thinks it pretty and so is more accepting of "one more sword". Ladies are generally more accepting of "one more sword" if it is pretty instead of black/plain/ugly. RinC .... www.sinosword.com/GS-series.html....

Hey guys, Suggestion, if any of you have a wife/gf that is not sword hostile and has at least mild interest, instead of ordering something, what about (in the case of a sword maker/seller offering choices such as Jkoo/Sino) let her design her own sword..blade and furniture...might get her more interested enough that the day of her telling you "no more swords" would be pushed off further into the future? RinC p.s. Yeah, I used to be Huawei only until I had a order that was late in being fulfilled and I (politely) asked for status one time too many and Huawei cancelled my order/refunded my money.
