That was the best review! I was eyeing this one when it came up on Kult of Athena but I already have the Cold Steel one so I just couldn't justify buying another sword that is basically the same. I have to say that your reviews are much more informative than some other bigger youtubers that tend to be more whimsical and gimmicky. Especially liked the background on the exchange between Peter Johnsson and KoA. They both have a very valid point. This messer and the Cold Steel one are basically clones of the Knecht, no doubt about it, and that's the reason why they are so popular. That being said from a consumer point of view: I welcome those additions to the market since the Knecht is impossible to get a hold of and is also very expensive. Have Albion make more Knechts and I will buy one... but in the meantime the next best thing works just fine. Also you mentioned a redesign... I am afraid that I would not be interested in a straight bladed messer (a more curved one, maybe), it's just the blade lines on the Knecht are so damn good that if you change it in a major way it will be less appealing. Best outcome would be if Peter Johnsson would design a budget Knecht for LK Chen (mainly beefier blade and maybe a more elegant guard, less ornate). It seems like the Balaur Arms blade is a little too thin and flexy. The only other messer manufacturer on the market that I really like is Landsknecht Emporium. That Falke is really neat and it's not a Knecht ripoff.

Thanks for watching and the kind words! Really appreciate it.
Keep in mind that the straight blade idea is just one of my suggestions - doesn't mean that's what they're going to do. And something that is very exciting is that James Elmslie has offered to Kult of Athena to consult heavily with them on the next version, free of charge. KoA could (and should) take this opportunity!

Here's a couple of historical Kriegsmesser I would like to see a reproduction of. I think they are from the Hofruestkammer Vienna. Attachments:

Arms and Armor had made a version of the second one, also Manning Imperial have one too... Very big and beefy but a cheaper less custom version of those would be awesome without encroaching on the IP of the Knecht.

Either of those would be a great choice. There's plenty of options, and James Elmslie has offered to consult with KoA, free of charge, on the next design as a thank you for their response to Peter Johnsson's complaint, so hopefully we get something new and amazing.

I will be looking forward to this collaboration if it happens! Great things could come out of it. Elmslie designed Messer by Balaur Arms... getting cash ready. Btw. I think that the way David Weiss responded to the criticism shows great integrity and opened the door to a great new opportunity.

Is the August pre-order going to be the last one for the year?

As I understand it, the August pre-order is currently in production, so KoA could not afford to cancel it, but after that is complete, no further of these models will be made. Instead a new model will be designed and (hopefully) released in 2024.

Kult of Athena have currently a blemished grade one in stock... anybody know what's wrong with it? Wraped blade? Only thing I see currently is munitions grade. I inquired about it, and this was the reply : "Munition grade is when we come across items that do not meet our high standards. Items classified as “Munitions Grade” typically have various bends, warps or twists in the blades making them poorly suited for sharpening and cutting. They are not blemished, so they look great (except maybe for a minor warp). They are still a great choice for collecting, costuming and re-enacting." ^That part in bold is what stood out to me.

That was my fear... that the blade is warped. If it were cheaper I would buy it for the scabbard alone... heard it would fit my Cold steel one.

My anecdotal/layman understanding is that any of the messer profile types (well, 3D and up, anyway) could be a kriegsmesser given the proper blade and hilt proportions. So yeah, plenty of historical designs available for inspiration. In the meantime, here’s an original design that is, imho, flat-out awesome: Type 4B by J&L (Driggers)
