So, in the interests of customization, I wanted to sharpen the Hanwei baskethilt sparring blunt version into a functioning beater blade.
I like the blade's thicker base, it seems sturdier than the sharp version; also, I like the shorter length. The steel is 1065, which seems more forgiving to my bashing it about than the sharp's 5160.
Is this feasible, or am I running a fool's errand? And what is it I don't know, that I don't know?
P.S. The ideal solution is to fit it with one of their bare blades, but no funds for that right now.

IMO, you can....but no telling what it will do to the balance etc. If you just want a beater, and can wait, grab a cheap machete...and save up for a new blade.

I’ll second Sir Thorfinn. Theoretically it can be done and after much work and time you may well destroy the handling characteristics. The only change I’d make to his comment is an inexpensive machete as opposed to ‘cheap’, like in a Walmart SS Chinese jobby. There are a number good ones out there. Several are made to resemble a cutlass or other swords, if that means anything to you. A good machete with a proper edge is an amazing cutter. FYI most good machetes come with a less than satisfactory edge, leaving it up to the owner to put his preferred edge on. Which is not all that strange as any machete owner needs to know how to sharpen and they are used for a number of various unrelated jobs. I find it is mostly the city dwelling, spoiled people that yell about this.
