I’m looking for a decorated sword. So I made some research and I found Mateusz Sulowski. I am interested by one of his XVIIIb: sulowskiswords.com/types-xviiiabc/type-xviiib-with-late-15th-century-scabbard/Firstly, this one from the link has a cost of 3500 euros. So I’d like to have your opinion about the quality of his work and if this is worth the price. Secondly, if you know any high quality swordsmith who’s good at making refined details (historical, not going into fantasy), please let me know I’d be very thankful. I have seen Patrick Barta’s work, Jake Powning, Rob Miller and some others but I don’t know their rating or their price range, but that’s the kind of piece I’m looking for. I have a budget of 5000 euros.

I'd say both Sulowskis offer great value for their work, especially considering the leather detailing and blade finishes. There will always be imperfections, but the overall package should be quite good.
It's outside my usual budget, but if you can afford either I don't think you'd be disappointed.
That being said, I don't think Mateusz is taking custom orders at the moment, and is just making blades to sell.

Nope he doesn’t but if you want some changes from one of his gallery like engravings or specific scabbard / belting he has no problem with that, price goes up or down depending on what you want to change. Btw he’s quite a nice guy. Thank you for your feedback

You might also be interested in something from Damian Sulwoski (Mateusz's brother). I reviewed one of his swords as well:

And sorry for multiple posts, but just noticed you mentioned Rob Miller. Just so you know, he has expressed support for and admiration of notorious Holocaust denier Gerard Menuhin:
Do with this information as you will - I just want to make sure it's known.

No worries about posts. The more I get, the wiser I become. I watched both of your videos, they are really great and objective. Read this article about Rob Miller. I am new into sword culture so I don’t know much about trends and news. Thank you for your comments sir!

I own one sword from Damian Sulowski (the "Black Forest" on his website) and have a commissioned blade being made later this year. I recommend his work. Lead time is about a year, based on our conversation.

I don't know why Davis Reproductions hasn't taken off yet. His work is phenomenal, but his second hand pieces go for cheaper than they should due to lack of brand recognition.
One thing special about him is he'll do modification work. So if there's an off the shelf piece that you like that's not fancy enough, he'll do some major reworks to them.
Are you in Europe? Another smith that doesn't get much recognition is Gael Fabre. He has one of the best eyes in the business and has made some very fancy pieces in the past. I also love that he allows you to choose how modern a production method you want. I've never handled his work, but from photos his sense for proportions and fine detail is shocking.

A sword that he made?

No. I'd like to get one from him sometime, but this is not that. Was just pointing out that he does customizations/repairs as well.

A previous owner of the sword looked like they repolished the tip, and it was a very different finish than the rest of the blade. The tip also developed some light pitting. Josh is going to clean that up and even out the finish, as well as replace the wire on the half of the grip with a new twisted wire.

That’s good to know. Yes I’m based in France, where Gael Gabre comes from too. The thing that made me pick Sulowski over him was the leatherwork. The fancy I need is a historical fancy, just like Maximilian I stuff. I think I’m pretty sure now to order from Sulowski brothers. I don’t know yet which one to choose, there is not much documentation on Mateusz to compare them but I slightly prefer the way he paints his scabbards, and I like the way Damian adds small unique details.

But I guess it won’t have any ornaments on the guard or pommel, but I’ll negotiate with Mateusz if there is any possibility to make some, or to collab with his brother if he has no time for this kind of customization.
