So, I've been looking for more underrated or underexposed war movies to check out, preferably 19th century to modern day. Absolutely loved Hamburger Hill, probably my favorite Vietnam movie, despite usually being overlooked in favor of Platoon (blech) and Full Metal Jacket.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Doesn't need to be action focused either. A long while back RufusScorpius recommended Welcome To Sarajevo for a war movie showing just how horrible war really is, and it was exactly like he described: A great movie I never want to see again.

Dunno if they're underrated or underexposed: Black Hawk Down, The Outpost (2020), 1917.

Dunno if they're underrated or underexposed: Black Hawk Down, The Outpost (2020), 1917. Saw all three. BHD was good, The Outpost was meandering at first but got good, and 1917 was very good.

Waterloo from 1970 is a terribly underrated film. It was a European/Soviet production, so I think North American audiences poo-pooed it when it originally released. Rod Steiger portrays Napoleon and it's a phenomenal performance. The battle scenes are among the most epic ever shot.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley.
Really well acted and the period is evoked beautifully.

Post civil war... Bone tomahawk was pretty gnar Oh God, watched it a week or so ago. THAT particular scene near the end of the film was indeed gnarly.

Bone Tomahawk is a good movie but not a war movie IMHO. Another good neowestern is Hostiles (2017), it can count as a war movie I think, or at least as a post-war movie.

My way is a pretty interesting movie if you want a more unique take on WW2. Comes from the perspective of Korean conscripts stuck in a failing japanese battle front

Another one, not neccesarily a movie, but Turn. Very entertaining series on the American Revolution, plenty of historical figures and probaby one of the best performances of Washington to date. That being said, naturally there are libertys taken here and there so if your an armchair historian youll probably have to turn your brain off every few episodes.

"We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson. Best Vietnam film I've seen.

"Wings" They used real WW1 veteran pilots for the action scenes.

One of my favorite war movies of all time, Tears of the Sun with Bruce Willis. Another I really like is a lot newer but is so very good, Hacksaw Ridge with Andrew Garfield, amazing movie.

Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.
